Rocket Mass Heater Workshop
A sustainable source of heat for the prairies? Learn how to build your very own Rocket Mass Heater...
WHEN: August 25 & 26 (Thursday (5-9pm) & Friday (9-5pm))
WHERE: Calgary, AB
Rocket mass heaters (RMH) are a great DIY option for creating cheap and efficient heat for a variety of situations. They can be used for heating a building, home, greenhouse, or even water for showers or a hot tub.
This workshop will be hands-on and over 1 1/2 days we'll construct a full scale and fully operable RMH for heating a small clay-straw building. We'll cover design theory, play with plenty of fire, and go through the nitty-gritty of building with cob - a mixture of sand, clay and straw.
In a nutshell, a rocket mass heater can:
- heat a home using a fraction of the firewood
- burn the wood so efficiently that there is virtually no smoke, simply steam and CO2 (after all, smoke is simply unburned fuel)
- maintain heat in a building for several days after only one firing
- be built for under $100 and in just a couple of days
- provide the most beautiful radiant heat!
This workshop will be taught by Ashley Lubyk of Dirt Craft Natural Building and Rob Avis of Verge Permaculture. Please register directly through Dirt Craft's website. The workshop will be capped at 10 students, so be sure to sign up early.
The workshop includes a cob oven baked lunch on Friday, as well as tea, coffee and refreshments.
